ssd – Why do exterior Time Machine backups seem on inner drive in /Volumes/.timemachine?

I am attempting to make use of Time Machine to again up my Mac (Ventura 13.5) onto an exterior SSD (“BackupSSD”). Surprisingly, many of the backup folders look like on the interior arduous drive in /Volumes/.timemachine as an alternative of the exterior SSD’s mountpoint /Volumes/BackupSSD 1. (I am not speaking about native snapshots, that are accurately in /Volumes/com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots.) Can anybody clarify what is going on on? I wish to be sure that if my inner drive dies, the exterior SSD alone can obtain an entire system restore.

After I view recordsdata by the Finder or Time Machine’s UI, issues look nice. The Time Machine menu says backups are going to the exterior SSD, “BackupSSD”, on my Mac, niffler:

And Finder tells me the backups are in the best place:

However once I run tmutil listbackups, the backups look like on the interior drive in /Volumes/.timemachine:

% tmutil listbackups

If I look inside “/Volumes/BackupSSD 1”, I see solely a single backup listing:

$ ls -l /Volumes/BackupSSD 1

-rw-r--r--@ 1 root  wheel  9433 Aug 27 07:53 backup_manifest.plist

the place I see a number of directories in /Volumes/.timemachine:

So the query is: the place are my backups, actually? If my Mac’s inner drive dies, does the SSD actually have every little thing it must do a full restore?

Thanks very a lot.
