This Giant-Format LED Matrix Show Chains 12 Panels to a Single Adafruit Matrix Portal S3

Semi-pseudonymous developer Devon, often known as TreasureDev and DJDevon3, has pushed an Adafruit Matrix Portal S3 LED matrix controller board to its very restrict — by chaining 12 panels off it for a large-format show, all held along with customized 3D-printed brackets.

“As much as 12 matrix panels pushed by a single Adafruit Matrix Portal S3 working CircuitPython,” Devon writes of the challenge, which is nothing if not eye-catching. “[It] requires 2× 5V 18A PSUs.”

The center of the challenge is Adafruit Matrix Portal S3, an LED matrix driver constructed across the Espressif ESP32-S3 microcontroller module and designed for creating Web of Issues (IoT) show boards from a number of LED matrices. Devon’s construct, although, pushes the machine to its restrict by connecting a complete of 12 64×32 RGB LED matrices — giving it an general decision of 192×128 from a grand whole of 24,576 LEDs.

Whereas the show’s energy calls for are sufficient to require not one however two 18A energy provides, just one Matrix Portal is used because the brains of the system — linked to all 12 panels plus a Bosch Sensortec BME688 sensor for temperature, humidity, strain, and risky natural content material (VOC), that are fed to the show for reside environmental readings.

To carry all 12 LED matrices collectively with out seen seams, Devon has designed a quartet of 3D-printable brackets — one design for panels on the highest and backside, some for the top panels, some for mid panels, and a few “quad brackets.”

Extra data is out there in Devon’s Mastodon submit; supply code has been printed to GitHub underneath the permissive MIT license, whereas information for 3D printing the brackets can be found on Printables underneath the Artistic Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 Worldwide license.
